Getting the most from staff surveys

In order to ensure you get the most from your staff survey (online or on paper) you need to base it on a robust research framework based on sound psychological principals. You also need to be clear about what you want to get out of the survey – your research objectives. Then create a clear and distinctive communication plan so that all employees are aware of the survey, its aims and how it will benefit employees. Steps need to be taken to ensure that access to the survey is simple and easy and concerns over confidentiality are alleviated. Survey champions spread throughout your organisation is one effective way of managing the communication process and gaining widespread interest in the survey.

Whatever media you use to convey your message, you must promise that survey results will be shared with all staff, and of course that promise must be kept. The design of the staff survey template will have an impact on the response to the survey. Questions must reflect the interest of the employees as well as those of management. Questionnaires that are overly long or ask too many demographic questions are off putting and can reduce response rates.
